» heisWATERoflife - No perfect curriculum
I have found that what works for 1 child doesn't work for the other. I have 2 children: 1 ADHD who actually thrives with Abeka curriculum (maybe because she has used it since her PK years) but she did have LifPacs for a year and did not do so well with them. My other child is coming out of ps (public school) and I know that Abeka is not for him. We have fretted over this decision as to what to use. We thought to go ecclectic, but I thought that may be too confusing for him as the district he was in did not use all the same books and he already expressed his dislike for how they operated. So, we chose another curriculum (SOS) which I will be breaking into more off-computer time than than on-computer time. He will need much more 1-on-1 work than "go get your schooling on the computer" type education. Unfortunately, he is one of the "Left Behind" kids of the PS (yes i read that thread too)In short, there is no PERFECT CURRICULUM that works for ALL CHILDREN ALL THE TIME. What works for 1 will NOT work for another. And what doesn't work for 1 just MAY work for the next. It's really all trial and error. Even for the special needs children. I know many families with ADD and/or ADHD children who just couldn't dream of using Abeka Book...their child just could not stay focused because they have too much graphics within their worktexts...my daughter works well with that. Althought she does get weary of all the review work; but I tweak that part for her.
I have been HS'ing since Kinder. starting 7th grade now...and I have learned this: there is no right or wrong way to HS and no right or wrong curriculum. We just all have to make sure of a few important things:
1 - our children know who loves them
2 - our children are gleaning important knowledge that leads to their success
3 - their mental and spiritual health is the best it can be.
Well, my 5 cents worth (inflation)
