How to Talk Like a Pirate
A pirate dictionary
Ahoy - a greeting; "Hello"
Arrr - a word that can mean many things, from "yes",
"maybe", "I'll think about it", "I don't know", "That was good", "That was bad", "That hurts", "The sunset with its beautiful colors of red, gold,orange, and purple is a glorious reminder of the beauty of creation". Well....the possiblities are endless!
Aye - Yes or okay.
Aye Aye - I'll do that right away, or "Yes, I understand"
Avast - a way of saying "What's up!", "What are you
doing?", or "Check it out!"
Booty - treasure, spices, jewels, or anything taken illegally.
Jolly Roger - a pirate flag usually showing white skull and crossbones on a black background.
Lad - a boy
Landlubber- land lover; a person who does not sail.
Lass - a girl
Matey - a friend and/or shipmate
Mateys - my friend/friends
Mutiny - a revolt against authority, especially naval or military power.
Plunder - the act of robbery or raiding.
Quarter - mercy; to be spared.
Scallywag - a bad person; scoundrel.
"Shiver Me Timbers!"- to express shock or surprise; The idea of timbers shivering comes from the shaking sent up in the mast (timbers) by either running aground or a hit by an foe.
The Spanish Main - referred to the land and waters around the Caribbean during the 17th century when the area was a major location for pirates.
Sprogs - untrained recruits; children.
