Hot, Hot Homeschooling

We all have to face homeschooling in some crazy weather. How to work it to your advantage!

I do not know what the weather is like where you live, but here in Texas it is brutally hot and dry! We are on our 9th day of triple-digit heat, and the drought stretches on!

Homeschooling is tough when the weather is rough! We are having to find more creative ways to stay at home since going out is not much of an option. So, how to beat the weather?

  • Use it to your advantage
  • - Talk about the weather, when it is an issue. Discover what weather patterns are in effect, what is causing your conditions, and how to care for your yard, house, plants, and pets when the weather turns.

  • Do something different
  • - Extreme weather conditions can affect us all mentally and physically. Sometimes we need a big change to help keep the blues away. So, do something really different - have a pajama and movie day, take a day trip or an over-nighter somewhere close, get out a bunch of art supplies and have an art fest - anything that is different than the daily norm can help break the monotony.

  • Research
  • - Find out what issues there are connected to your weather pattern and do research on latest findings or methods. For example, with a year-long drought with no end in sight, I am encouraging my kids to research Xeriscaping, landscpaing using natural plants. After all, we are eventually going to have to replace the dead grass and plants!

  • Celebrate
  • - There are many holidays and celebrations, large and small. Find one and celebrate it. Here are 3 to finish the month with:

July 22 - the birthdate of William Spooner, an Anglican priest and member and one-time dean of Oxford University. His claim to fame? The "Spoonerism", a tip of the slung (slip of the tougue). History has it that he was aggravatingly prone to these, although much of what it attributed to him may be myth. Research him on the web, and find some of his more famous Spoonerisms. Then, try to have a whole conversation in the William Spooner syle!

July 28 - the birthdate of Beatrix Potter, the famous children's writer and illustrator. Read her books. Draw animals or nature. Potter used to keep a journal of her life, written in secret code. Make up your own code and record a journal entry for the day.

July is National Ice Cream Month At least, here in America it is, but that should not stop you from celebrating if you live in another country. Go get ice cream at a local ice cream store. or buy some yourself, bring it home, and have an ice cream party. Make your own homemade ice cream, and learn the scientific process of ice cream making!

    Most of all, have fun!
