Ending one year and anticipating another.
It won't be long now until we switch to summer mode at our house. Which means another year of homeschooling is through. This is the time of year when I reflect on what did and did not work in our homeschooling, and what I want next year to be.
This year we tried a different approach to curriculum, going from eclectic to a more classical, Latin-based approach. I learned:
- My own teaching style just does not work well with tight regulations. Neither do my kids. They need more flexibility.
- I love the whole Classical curriculum. However, I need to accept it may take us longer to get through parts of it . And that is okay. After all, I never took Latin. My kids will be just fine if they do the first course in two years instead of one.
- I learned not to be afraid of my own deficiences in teaching my kids. Some things I can teach them, some we can learn together, and some they will excel in without me. It is a humbling thing.
- I really, really need to stop buying so many books.
