I have three children. One has a birthday in the beginning of November, just two days after Halloween and a few weeks before Thanksgiving. Another has a birthday in the beginning of December, just one week after Thanksgiving and a few weeks before Christmas. Every year by the time Christmas rolls around, they have already received many toys (we have a large extended family).
Last year, I got tired of picking up and stepping on junky toys. I started to think, what can we do differently for birthdays. I got on-line and began to look around. I came upon a website offering educational toys. The more I looked, the more I liked. This site offered so many toys I knew my kids would flip over. Taking a chance, I completely ignored my oldest son's birthday wish list, and picked one cool toy for him for his birthday, I choose Snap Circuits, Jr., a toy that explores electronics for children. Guess which toy he played with after his party?
A similar experience occurred with my youngest son on his last birthday. The site is called Fat Brain Toys. They have a ton of great educational toys. They have recently updated their website. The only complaint I have is that you used to be able to search for gift ideas using the categories of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences. I really liked that feature, as it helped me find things for my children according to their interests I might never have thought of. They have taken that away, but there are other ways you can search.
However, they have added an "Educator's Corner", including a section just for homeschoolers. You can submit and view lessons plans and ideas, participate in a message board, and find resources. This is just under way, so I look foward to seeing how it develops.
As you search for gift ideas for birthdays, holidays, or school, keep in mind that toys can be educational and fun. Seek for something different, out-of-the-ordinary - ou might be surpised with the results!
