Legitimate Ways for Homeschoolers to Make Money Online

Jul 20, 2009 Linda Hayase

Homeschoolers and stay-at-home moms looking for ways to earn extra money from home can find profitable part-time jobs and online opportunities.

Homeschooling presents unique financial challenges, especially in these tough economic times. Many families who choose to home educate their children have one primary breadwinner, yet could use extra money to pay for curriculum, supplies, field trips and outside classes. Leaving the home is not always a practical option for homeschoolers who typically shepherd their kids 24/7.

Working from home offers flexible hours, no commuting, and the ability to dress as one pleases. Best of all, parents can continue home educating their children while earning extra money part-time. Here are ways homeschool moms and dads can earn money working at home.

Write and Sell Curriculum and Lesson Plans Online

A creative homeschooler who is the go-to person for curriculum advice may find it profitable to sell original lesson plans, unit studies, and e-books. Some curriculum publishers and entrepreneurs upload and sell their e-books and digital products on CurrClick, a one-stop curriculum shopping site. Clients pay for and download their desired curriculum; CurrClick deducts a commission; and the seller reaps the profits.

Other self-publishing sites where homeschoolers can sell their lesson plans and e-books include Lulu and Clickbank. Some companies encourage affiliate marketing, which can increase product visibility and sales. Curriculum authors and homeschool bloggers may discover mutually beneficial relationships, earning income for both parties.

Work at Home as a Live Call Center Agent

Call centers that field incoming phone calls for infomercials, direct mail companies, insurance agents and restaurant orders are looking for home-based call agents. LiveOps, a virtual contact center based in California, hires independent agents working from home to handle their inbound calls. Pay is based on call minutes, call volume and sales bonuses. Agents determine their own hours, making it a flexible work at home opportunity for homeschoolers and stay-at-home moms and dads.

West at Home also hires home-based phone agents to handle customer service calls for a wide range of clients, including ProFlowers. Employees receive paid online training and pay based on phone call length, call volume or a minimum hourly rate, whichever is greater.

Earn Extra Money at Home with Online Writing Jobs

Homeschoolers who have a way with words should check out the ProBlogger's Job Board, where paid freelance writing gigs are added weekly, if not daily. Niche sites looking for writers include education, travel, technology, automobile, sports and business blogs.

Pay and commitments vary among sites – some blogs require short posts one to three times a week, while other sites are looking for prolific writers who are passionate about a specific topic and have SEO (search engine optimization) skills. Suite 101 is one respected venue searching for qualified writers with expertise in their fields.

Make Extra Money Online as an Expert Advisor

LivePerson is an online service that matches inquirers with expert advisors who are qualified to answer their questions. Applicants set up a free account and list their professional expertise on topics such as education, health, technology, business, home, shopping, social media and legal advice.

Experts determine whether prospective clients can contact them by live chat or email. They set their own per-minute rate from which LivePerson deducts a fee. The company pays their contributors once a month, providing they have met the minimum income threshold that month.

Balancing Homeschooling with Working at Home

Juggling homeschooling and part-time work will require effective time management skills. Schedule work around school hours, during nap times and after the kids are asleep. Enlist cooperation from the entire family to help with household chores as a productive team. With a little pluck and diligence, a homeschool mom can flourish in her dual roles as her children’s teacher and as a successful moonlighter.
