Homeschooled children often get distracted with their lessons, and this can be a problem for mom or dad. Learn ways to motivate your child to get the work done.

All kids lose interest in school lessons at one time or another, but when you homeschool this could become a big problem. When children are homeschooled, they can become distracted quite easily. They may not be as motivated as you would like during the day. The following are all ways that will help you motivate your child during homeschool lessons.

Reduce Distractions

One of the best ways to help keep your homeschooled child motivated is to reduce the distractions. If you have been homeschooling for a while, then you know it is important to have a dedicated space for your school day. This needs to be in an area where the distractions are at a minimum. That means no television, no toys, and no ringing phone. If you are interrupted by the phone ringing, then your child will lose motivation. If a younger sibling is watching cartoons nearby, then your child will become distracted and lose his or her motivation.

Offer Breaks

It is also important to offer your child breaks throughout the day. This is no different that most public schools. You simply cannot expect a child of any age to sit still all day and learn. There needs to be time to go to the restroom, have a snack, and enjoy lunch. When your child gets regular breaks, he will more than likely stay focused throughout the day.

Offer Fun Activities

It is also important that you offer fun activities. Since you homeschool, you have the ability to pick up and go outside to learn about nature, or jump in the car to head off to a museum or zoo. Nothing says you have to sit at the table all day and look at pictures of animals or do worksheets. Your child will stay motivated by doing fun hands-on activities. If you have fun, educational activities, you can bet that your child will stay motivated to learn.

Reward Your Child

Rewards also work well for motivating your child. Choose rewards carefully. Your child needs to feel as though he is working towards a goal. Perhaps you can plan a fun activity once he masters the multiplication table. Rewards will get most kids moving in the right direction.

Plan Your Lessons

Don’t underestimate the power of your lesson plans. You need them so that you and your child can be successful at homeschooling. Don’t think that you can simply teach your child whatever you want when the mood strikes. You need to plan in advance and have the lesson ready to go when you are ready to teach. If you are organized, then the day runs smoothly and you are less likely to lose your child’s attention. If your child senses that you are not organized, he will probably pick up on this and not take his work very seriously.

Sure homeschooling offers unique learning opportunities not found in traditional schools, but be careful to use these advantages for learning purposes to help keep your child on track. Also find ways to keep yourself motivated to teach, so your child will stay motivated to learn.
