Summer Travel for HomeschoolersFun and Educational Trip Planning Ideas For Homeschool FamiliesFamily vacations do not need to be expensive or involve exotic locations in order to be fun. Why not involve the kids in the planning process?
Travel by train or car can offer homeschooled children many great learning opportunities in the areas of geography, science, history and English. Letting a child help plan a trip can give him a sense of accomplishment, boost his confidence and allow him to feel as though he plays a role in the families decision making. Involving Children in Planning a Family VacationTo make a family trip more interesting, offer the child a set of guidelines including the mode of transportation, a budget, a maximum travel distance, and the duration of the trip. Have the child research travel options either online or with a travel agent (a parent should go with the child but allow him to ask the questions). Then plan a family meeting where he can present two outlines complete with places to stay, things to see and a budget breakdown for the entire trip from which the family can choose the summer adventure. Younger children can research a particular event or attraction they would like to visit and include a map of the attraction, what it will cost and the length of time it would take to see the entire attraction or event. With a younger student, it is important that parents be involved in choosing the attraction to ensure it is a realistic one for the family. Remember the venue could be as simple as a local park or as extravagant as Disney World. Summer Road Trip Ideas For HomeschoolersRoad trips are the easiest trips to plan. See if you can visit museums, science centers, zoos, festivals and popular attractions within a two-hour drive from home. Students can keep photo diaries or journals of their travels, and they can help with details such as meal planning, map reading and keeping track of the family budget. Remember it can also be fun to get in the car and just go with no set destination in mind. There are many roads in a town or district that are seldom traveled. Why not venture off the beaten path and see what adventures there are to be had? Be sure to include children in trip preparation and ensure the basic necessities are not forgotten. Planning an Educational Family Train TripTravel by train can be a relaxing, economical and educational experience for homeschool families. Using online ticketing systems, like the one offered by Via Rail, students can be directly involved with planning the trip, budgeting, planning stopovers and researching historical or cultural festivals they wish to visit. It is important to remember while traveling by train there are people of many ethnic and cultural backgrounds aboard. This is one of the charms of train travel so don’t be afraid to talk to fellow travelers. It is amazing what can be learned about people, places and things through polite conversation but of course the same safety rules apply as at home. A child should not be allowed to wander the train unaccompanied or to talk to strangers without mom or dad present. Over all it is important families remember to take time to enjoy the process of planning a trip and spending time together. Finding the balance between educational ventures and fun can sometimes be difficult, but if the lines of communication between parent and child are open, both will enjoy the experience and learn from it as well.
