Here are some tips and ideas for sponsoring a Science Fair Project event with your homeschool co-op. Included are the basic things that kids need to do to get ready.

Homeschool Co-op groups often combine forces to teach science. It is just one of those subjects that is easier taught to a group of kids, so it just makes sense. Have you considered sponsoring a Science Fair Project event within your coop? It's fun for the kids, and it gives them a chance to really show what they've learned.

Listed below is a step-by-step guide on what is needed to pull off the best Science Fair Project event ever!

Selecting a Topic

Have students decide what topic they will choose for their individual projects. This might include anything that they have learned during the year, or can be narrowed to a specific topic, such as chemistry, physics, energy, etc. Students should understand that they are working on their own project, so their ideas should be uniquely their own. You can gather some great Science Fair Project ideas online.

Gathering the Evidence

Students need to gather their data to perform their project/experiment effectively and accurately. This requires research into what tools and materials they need. Thinking about this ahead of time will save the time and trouble of trying to track items down at the last minute. Using resources such as magazines, books, and the Internet is also a good idea.

Scientific Method

There are few questions that students will need to ask in order to prove their theories and hypotheses. These may include:

  • What are you trying to deduce (find out)?
  • State your hypotheses at the beginning of your notes.
  • Decide and document how you will prove your theories and measure your results.
  • What will you use as a constant variable and a changing variable to help prove your theories?

Perform a Controlled Experiment and Document Your Data

Every good scientist will test their theories by performing an actual experiment. It is also important to keep your data in an organized fashion, as you want to be able to go back and tell others how the experiment is performed and why or why not it worked.

Visual Documentation

Graphs and charts help students remember their outcomes. Recording outcomes with this method is also easy for observers to deduce your results.

Preparing an Exhibit

This is one of the most fun parts of a Science Fair Project. This is where students will display their experiment and their supporting documentation. Be sure that the exhibit is pleasing to observers by making it interesting and organized.

Report Time

Students will want to write a short report about their experiment in a well-thought-out manner. It should be to the point and interesting. It should contain all the information that you used for your experiment, an explanation of what you were trying to prove, and site your sources for gathering information.

Practice for Judging

Practice your presentation with family and friends. Be comfortable with your presentation, so when the big day comes you will not have the jitters.

When the event arrives, you should be ready to go. It should be a fun time for the students. Be sure to invite all of your family and friends. They will really enjoy seeing what homeschoolers learn, and it will knock their socks off! Is there an experiment for that?
