Road Schoolers Unschooling in an RV

Living in Recreational Vehicles Takes the Home out of Homeschooling

Sep 14, 2009 Lisa Russell

RVing helps road schooling families see the world. Homeschooling in motorhomes and campers gives families the freedom to take a permanent field trip, unschooling in an RV

Homeschooling proponents often claim that the world is their classroom, even when they're studying it from the kitchen window. For road schoolers, though, unschooling while living in a motorhome really does make the world, or at least the highway, their classroom. Instead of reading about geography, science and history, they just live it. On the road, there's time to read, plenty of important things to calculate and time to spend with family. Visiting real people and places is much more interesting than sitting in a desk while a teacher talks about them.

Families, like the fictitious Wright Family in the Wright on Time book series by Lisa Cottrell Bentley [Do Life Right, Inc., 2009], can explore at their own pace in a motorhome. Since unschoolers "follow their bliss," no two trips will be the same. Generally, families will research nearby destinations and plan what they'll explore as they go along. Road schoolers find homeschooling field trips and visits to parks and museums are a fun way to spend time with the family. One RVing mom points out that the smaller living space is much easier to clean. An online support group for Unschoolers focuses on RVing families and unschooling conventions and conferences all over the country provide social and spiritual relief.

Road Schoolers

Many road schooling families make use of online homeschooling resources, as well as real life learning opportunities. True unschooling can be a harder concept for families to feel comfortable with. One of the biggest obstacles for RVing families is the lack of space. Recreational vehicles don't allow much room for extra homeschooling curriculum. Internet resources and real life experiences, coupled with long conversations are effective learning tools, too.

RVing

Families who wish to live and travel need to either save enough money to live on for the duration of the trip or come up with a way to earn money on the road.Speaking at conventions is one way, selling artwork or services is another. Working on the internet is yet another option. RVing families often claim that life on the road is less expensive than life in a "stick house"

Homeschooling is a decision that turns a lot of heads, but unschooling in an RV is one that truly sets a family apart. While the mobile lifestyle might not be for everyone, there's a lot to be learned from reading about families on the road. Whether a family plans to hit the road indefinitely or to schedule an extended road trip, it's truly the makings for an educational trip of a lifetime.
