Making Homeschool MemorableFun Traditions You Can Start This Coming Year
Homeschoolers have unlimited opportunities to make homeschooling a memorable experience for kids. Use the flexibility to your advantage and incorporate some fun.
Sure having a routine makes running a homeschool more successful. Kids thrive on routine, and so do moms and dads who do the teaching. But, what if you shake things up just a bit, and allow some crazy traditions to take place? It makes homeschooling a more memorable experience for the whole family. Here are some ideas you can incorporate this year. Birthday HolidayWhile a birthday is not a National Holiday, it can be a family holiday in your house. When a child in the family is celebrating a birthday during the year, let that person have a day off from learning. If it is mom or dad celebrating a birthday, let everyone have the day off. It really builds excitement in the house, and makes the honoree feel very special. Field Trip FrenzyHands-on learning through field trips is fun and productive for everyone in the family. Slate a day or two each month for a field trip. Let each member of the family pick a place that they would like to visit, whether it be a farm, a museum, a factory, or even a day trip to the mountains. Everywhere a homeschooling family goes is an opportunity to learn something. Make a tradition of learning in your family. Yearly FestivalGather some homeschooling friends and implement a Homeschool Festival in your community. This can be a day of fun and learning to share with other homeschooling families. Give the festivals a theme each year, like a Renaissance theme, a Carnival theme, or an Oceanic theme. Each family takes care of booth that provides information about a certain subject that has to do with the theme. Dress up for the occasion and have plenty of activities. It gives everyone something to look forward to next year with new ideas brewing throughout the year. Let Someone Else Do the TeachingHave grandma or grandpa take part in the learning process of their grandchildren. History is a great subject that older folks can teach to children, especially when the subject is about the era they grew up in. Sometimes all it takes is for you to ask if they are willing to teach. It makes a terrific memory for your kids and keeps your family involved in your children's lives in a big way. This may not be possible for all families to do, but if you can, go for it! Whether you incorporate one or two of these ideas, or even develop some of your own, traditions are cherished and they make looking back at your life a happy time. Take advantage of the freedoms that homeschooling offers and your children will thank you.
