It's here - the holiday shopping season. This time of year can leave homeschooling families world-weary and tired. After all, those who homeschool spend more time at home among their various possessions. The thought of adding more to an already full house can be daunting.
Homeschooling families have many options when it comes to holiday gifts. Toys are fine and good, but homeschoolers have wide interests. Remember all those cool catalogues you pour through at various times, staring wistfully at the many items you would love to purchase for school but cannot fit into the budget? Take a second look. These may make some of the best Christmas gifts for homeschoolers.
Consider these different gifts:
- A microscope - really good microscope is a great investment for school, and just really, really cool.
- An extra set of slides for that microscope
- A neat science set, like Smithsonian's MicoChem set
- a rock tumbler
- Neat books - let's face it, books can be expensive. Holidays are a great time for giving some unique books. Do your children fancy Ancient Egypt, or perhaps a cool art book? The sky is the limit in choices.
- Give the gift of a class - perhaps a karate class, a drawing class, or skating lessons
- Computer games
- Audio CD's - there are so many and these are great to listen to in the car. (We enjoy Odds Bodkins, David Novak's "The Cookie Girl", and Radio Theatre's "Narnia"). Audible.com, is a great site for audio book downloads for MP3 players or for burning CD's.
- A magazine subscription
These are just a few ideas for different gifts for the holidays. Most of all, really look around for something different. These things are not just for homeschooling families, either. Most families with children get tired of the same-ol' toys that collect around the house. Look outside the box to give a sense of delight and the unexpected.
