Find creative writing worksheets and printable writing prompts. Learn where to go to download free printable book report forms and writing journals from free printables.

With so many websites advertising free printable worksheets, it's easy to get distracted hunting down and trying to print documents in several file formats, from Adobe Acrobat reader to zipped archive files, sometimes finding printables is more trouble than it's worth.

Some websites, though, have mastered the system and have provided printable worksheets that are easy to find, print just the way you want them to, and offer a variety of topics. Here are some that focus on writing journal pages and creative writing skills for children of all ages.

Printable Writing Journals

When you're looking for printable writing journals, consider whether or not you'd like story starters or writing prompts or even just lined pages. Some of these will have imaginative sketches or even graphic writing prompts designed to get children observing an image to look for clues, and writing about their perceptions.

Keeping a writing journal is a great way to encourage reluctant writers. Being in the habit of writing each day can break down resistance to creative writing, get kids accustomed to anticipating having to write, and keep a mental list of things they'd like to write about.

Worksheets for Creative Writing

Keeping a folder handy with several different printable writing prompts and journal pages makes it easy for kids to find a topic they'd like to write about. Flipping through several ideas changes the assignment from “write about this” to “choose one to write.” Allowing children to be part of the assignment creation is easier when there are so many options. Having blank journal writing pages gives children the freedom to think of their own titles and prompts, or to write nonfiction essays for fun.

Creative writing worksheets can be used outside of journaling time, too. For example, in a study of the United States election process, kids can write about which candidate they'd vote for, or perhaps what they would say in a speech if they were nominated, or who they think would make a good President.

Free Book Report Forms

Old fashioned book report forms used to simply ask students to name the author, the tittle, the publisher , maybe the setting and list a few plot points. These days, however, book reports can delve into the psychology of the characters, the historical impact of the events in the book, compare and contrast different characters and even more. Enchanted Learning offers free book report forms with graphic organizer diagrams, forms designed for specific books, and forms for comparing characters within a book and books in a certain genre.

Use printable worksheets wisely, print them as needed. The number of free worksheets available online can make a parent wonder why anyone ever buys workbooks anymore. It's true, there can be too much of a good thing. Learn how to manage free printable worksheets. Print what you need and bookmark the rest.
