Apples Theme Lesson Plan

A Homeschooling Unit Study

Aug 11, 2007 Denise Oliveri

Apples come in many colors, shapes, and sizes, but they all taste yummy. Here is a homeschooling unit study all about apples, including fun activities for your kids.

Note: Parents please feel free to print this page as a resource.

How Does an Apple Grow?

Apples grow all year. They are harvested (ready to be picked) in the autumn. Here is their life cycle during all seasons:

Winter: Trees are pruned so apples will grow. Pruning is the process of cutting off dead branches roots from trees.

Spring: This is when the apple tree will start to bloom and marks the beginning of the growing process.

Summer: More pruning takes place during this season. The apples can be seen and need enough water to maintain them through the hot weather. Some apples may even be ready for harvesting during late summer.

Fall: Apples are picked, packed, and sent off to grocery stores, produce stands, and other places to be sold to customers. Workers do their best to ship off only the good apples, as they are hand-picked.

Plan

Read a book about apples. Use the reference list above for suggestions. Talk about how apples grow and perhaps make up a quiz about the book for your child to take.

Make an apple craft using the idea below.

Apple Prints

Materials:

  • Apples, sliced in half with seeds intact
  • Paper towels
  • Poster board
  • Tempera paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Markers (optional)

Directions:

  1. Have an adult cut apples in half.
  2. Dry the juice by patting with a paper towel.
  3. Place paint directly on the meat of the apple, including the seeds. You can use one color, or put a different color on each side of the apple.
  4. Just like a stamp, dot the poster board with apple shapes. You can create a picture with the apple shapes. You can also make an apple print and then use markers to turn that print into a picture.

Make a recipe using apples.

Apple Spread

Ingredients:

  • 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup apples, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup pecans, chopped

Directions: Blend all ingredients together on whip in a blender. Use the spread on bagels or bread.

Field Trip Opportunity

Make a trip to an apple orchard. Apples are in full bloom during the autumn season. This is a great time to have a field trip. The Apple Journal will help you find an orchard near you.

Apple Coloring Page

Print the Apple coloring below to help teach the letter "A" and have some coloring fun with an apple.

Favorite Apple Survey

Print the apple survey sheets below to find out what people's favorite apples are. Use the information to make a bar graph to show your results. You can call friends and relatives, or you can e-mail them to ask what is their favorite apple. Learn more about the different varieties of apples with Tooter 4 Kids.

Apple Seed Math

Have a variety of different apples. Cut them in half. Have your child dig out and cut the seeds that are in the apples. Which apples have more seeds? Which apples had the least seeds? Did any of the different apples have an equal number of seeds?
